22 Bullets, the English language title for this Luc Besson produced thriller, refers to the number of bullets fired into former Marseille mob boss Charly Mattei (Jean Reno) in an underground car park. The original French title is L’ Immortel because amazingly Mattei survives. 22 Bullets sees Reno reunited with Besson for the first time since Wasabi (Gerard Krawczyk 2001).

22 Bullets Based on Gangster Jacques Imbert

Loosely inspired by events in the life of gangster Jacques Imbert 22 Bullets has clearly been embellished on its way to the screen. Imbert was shot seven times by three men, not twenty-two times by eight men. While nobody wants to be shot seven times, it is still fifteen less bullets than Charley Mattei catches in the movie. Imbert lost the use of his right hand, so he taught himself to handle a gun with his left hand. Shortly afterwards his rivals had a habit of dying.
