Questing

When your WoW character starts out in the world, completing quests is really the only way to gain experience and gold. As a lower level player, you will only earn a few copper or silver per quest, but this adds up as long as you don't spend frivolously. During questing you will also loot objects and materials that you won't need or can't use. These you will sell to any vendor and receive cash in return.

Often, the reward for completing a quest is not money, but a piece of armor. Sometimes this armor will not be appropriate for your class but will be "soulbound" (so you will not be able to sell it on the auction house or give it away) and can be sold to a vendor for money.

At higher levels (58+), questing alone can net you several hundred gold a day. This amount increases as you level through Outlands, Northrend, and the new zones in Cataclysm.
