The city was settled in 1839 when a Swiss emigrant, Captain John Sutter, got a 50,000 acre Land grant from the Mexican government. Sacramento quickly became a major supply center for the northern Mother Lode country. In 1856 the first railroad in California connected Sacrament to Folsom. In 1860 the town became the main terminus of the Pony Express line.
