This weekend will mark the 15th year that Alpena will be commemorating Michigan's maritime history with the annual Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival.

According to festival coordinator Melanie Kirn, the number of lighthouses that festival-goers will be touring has grown to 11 this year, strung along the state's northeast shore along Lake Huron. The lighthouses stretch from the Old Mackinaw Point Light in Michilimackinac State Park to the west, and to the Tawas Point Light off Tawas Bay to the east.

Festival activities centered in Alpena

Thursday's grand opening activities for the Oct. 7-10 festival will be highlighted, Kirn said, by an evening welcome party at the Thunder Bay Recreation Center, located at 701 Woodward Ave. in Alpena, MI. What makes this kickoff to the festival very special is that it promotes the Sunrise Food Coalition's's campaign to bring awareness to hunger. With the menu items being food grown by farmers in northeast Michigan. The 5-9 p.m. welcome party will culminate in a silent auction.
