Writers such as D.H Lawrence, convey their views on the country's fodder in early depictions of the country. In his documentary novel 'Kangaroo', Mr Lawrence describes Australian soil in the 20's as being littered with cans, suggesting the country's leanings towards a can culture.

When England invaded Australia over 200 years ago, food practices changed from the highly cooperative hunter gatherer style adopted by the Aborigines, to agricultural production and grazing. Early in the 19th century, bush workers were paid rations in beef, sugar, flour and tea, as well as some liquor (which was drunk more for the effect than the taste). The diet from here naturally gravitated towards meat cooked on the open fire, damper (made from flour), and very sweet tea.
