Alaskan Gold Rush Map

When gold was discovered in the hills of northern California, crowds of prospectors rushed to the area. Settlements sprang up along the most productive streams and near the mines that followed. Nevada City is one such town and a visit there today is a delight.

How the Town Began

The town’s beginnings were in 1849 when gold was found in Deer Creek. Some reports say that those panning for gold were bringing in over a pound a day of the precious metal from this little body of water.

More and more miners arrived, hoping to make it rich, and the town developed. After a few location names were used, the established town leaders chose Nevada, Spanish for “snow-covered,” as the official identification. When the adjoining new state chose Nevada as its name, the Gold Rush town became “Nevada City.”
